âHere he comes,â David murmurs.
I rub my eyes and squint through the windshield. The morning sun streams through the leafy canopy over the western neighborhood and gives it a sparkly freshness that belies the secret skeletons that dwell out of sight.
I thank Heaven Iâm not investigating people and events in my own neighborhood. I would hate to develop this sickening aversion to the place the way I am toward the western neighborhood.
Down the block, Kathyâs door opens and Will emerges wearing nice khaki slacks, polished leather shoes, and a button down shirt and blazer with no tie. His wet hair sticks to his scalp.
âHe looks nice,â I remark.
âI wonder where heâs going,â David adds. âHe looks like heâs got a date.â
âAt nine-thirty in the morning?â I point out. âHardly.â
David waits until Will walks out of sight before he starts the car. He creeps down the block in stealth mode. We barely keep Will in view leaving the neighborhood. He follows the street to Main Street and continues to the center of town.
He doesnât stop at any stores. He nods to passersby on his way until he comes to the park. He lingers near the tennis courts for a while. He reclines against the chain-link fence and watches the players hitting balls back and forth. Then he ambles over to the skateboard area.
He slouches around the periphery here, too. He observes young guys zipping back and forth on their boards and their rollerblades, but he doesnât join in. He keeps his hands thrust deep in his pockets. I donât like the look of this.
We stay in the car and David watches him through binoculars. Will paces back and forth a few times. After an hour, a new batch of skaters arrives. Four of them approach him.
âHello!â David murmurs to himself. âThis looks a little more like it.â
âIs he selling them drugs after all?â I donât want to believe it, but what else can he be doing at the park at this hour?
âHeâs just talking to them at the moment. He still hasnât taken his hands out of his pockets.
One skater points across the lawn toward the other end of town and the whole group explodes with side-splitting laughter. They hug their ribs and some bend over coughing. Just then, Will pulls his hands out, but only to clasp the other kidâs hand. They give each other a quick handshake before Will strides away on his mysterious errand.
David lowers his binoculars. âWell, what do you know about that? No drugs changed hands. If he was doing it, I would have thought he would do it here. Maybe heâs clean after all.â
âWe better follow him.â
He starts the motor and we carry on sneaking after Will. He circles the park and plunges into the trees. We lose sight of him in the dense undergrowth heading for the houses scattered around West End.
I sigh in defeat. âOh, well. I guess we lost him.â
âNot at all,â David counters. âHeâs following a trail to the highway. Itâs a well-known shortcut.
